Nanoindentation is a mechanical testing technique that can probe the elastic and plastic response of a small volume of material. This makes it useful for measuring properties of materials with complicated mictrostructures or a gradient in deformation. We have applied this technique to all of our research, testing the mechanical properties of "third bodies" created due to wear and the deformed microstructures due to shot peening, machining or cutting processes.
