Two materials sliding against each other in relative motion creates a "buried" interface, which is the contacting interface that is inherently difficult to study. We make use of in situ tribometry to study the mechanical and chemical changes that occur at the sliding interface. Our in situ studies allow us to study wear mechanisms and reveal details not observable by ex situ techniques alone.
